Description
Released by Atari Games in 1989 (distributed in Japan by Namco), S.T.U.N. Runner is a high-speed racing game set in a futuristic world. Players must race toward the goal within a time limit while using their blasters to eliminate obstacles and enemies. Collecting "star icons" along the course allows players to unleash a "Shockwave" attack. Key attractions of the game include the Atari tradition of selecting your starting stage and the unique localization of the Japanese version, such as the memorable "Shockwave" announcement. Due to the nature of this preserved archival hardware, some technical limitations exist, including a failure to pass the video shift register test and the presence of an unused coin slot. Nevertheless, its innovative experience remains deeply etched in the history of retro gaming.
Story
You play as a S.T.U.N. (Spread Tunnel Underground Network) runner of the future, piloting a high-speed machine capable of exceeding 900 mph. The objective is to race through various tunnels and courses to reach the finish line within the time limit. Use your onboard laser cannons and the "Shockwave" special weapon to eliminate enemy vehicles and obstacles that block your path. The ultimate goal is to reach the "Ultimate Challenge" and compete to achieve a greater distance than previous players within a limited time.
