Battle Zone

Released by Atari in 1980, this was a pioneering tank simulation game. Players use dual levers to maneuver their tank and destroy a continuous onslaught of enemy units. Guided by a development philosophy focused on pushing the technological boundaries of the era, the designers used red cellophane overlays on the radar and message displays to compensate for the hardware's graphical limitations. The cabinet also featured a periscope viewer, successfully heightening the experience and sense of realism. As a side note, a modified version known as "Army Battlezone" was eventually developed for use as a gunnery training simulator for the U.S. military.
