Description

Released by Taito in 1987 and developed by Toaplan, Sky Shark is a vertically scrolling shooter and the second entry in the "Tiger" series, following its predecessor, Tiger-Heli. Players take on the role of a pilot known as the "Sky Shark," tasked with single-handedly infiltrating enemy lines to save their outnumbered forces using an eight-way joystick and two buttons. The game’s appeal lies in its exhilarating power-up system; by destroying red squadron formations, players can collect items to upgrade their shot capacity up to 12 consecutive rounds. Combined with powerful bombs, this allows for overwhelming offensive capabilities. Comprised of five stages in total, the game features a grueling difficulty that continues to scale until the 16th loop. The high-tempo, driving background music—which would later come to be known as the "Toaplan style"—remains one of the elements most beloved by fans.

Story

As the war neared its end, the majority of our military bases fell under enemy occupation. With defeat looming, a single pilot was entrusted with a critical mission, serving as our last hope for a turnaround. People have come to call this pilot, who challenges the enemy lines alone, the "Sky Shark."
