Wiz

Released by Seibu Kaihatsu in 1985, Wiz is a side-scrolling action game in which a young wizard embarks on an adventure wielding eight different types of magic. Beyond the charm of its adorable characters, the game is defined by its strategic control scheme, which requires players to toggle between selecting and casting spells using two separate buttons. While players can expand their repertoire of techniques by collecting "Magic Notebooks" during their journey, the game also features a unique touch: attempting to use a spell that has not yet been learned causes a flower to sprout from the protagonist's head. Although the controls require a degree of mastery, this title offers deep tactical gameplay that belies its dainty appearance.
