Released for arcades by Hot-B in July 1988, Cloud Master is a side-scrolling shooter that follows the journey of Michael Chen, who seeks to become the "Cloud Master," the highest-ranking immortal in a world inspired by Chinese folklore. The game is known for its comical atmosphere, featuring unique characters like ramen bowls and shumai dumplings. It also incorporates strategic elements, allowing players to utilize various magical techniques by entering specific doors. While the game consists of five stages in total, it has been noted since its initial release that a "garbage" sprite appears in the top-left corner of the screen due to a technical programming bug.

Michael Chen, an apprentice hermit, sets out on a journey of training to become a true celestial master. Riding his golden cloud, Michael clears his path by defeating the various enemies that block his way. Aiming to earn the title of "Cloud Master," he fights his way through five stages of battle.
