Bonze Adventure

Released by Taito in 1988, Bonze Adventure is an action game characterized by its unique world inspired by the Buddhist concept of hell. Players control a monk who must battle his way toward King Enma, hurling magical charms to defeat spirits and demons. Despite its comical graphics, the game’s diverse power-up system and challenging stage design fueled the competitive spirit of gamers at the time. The Yama King, ruler of the underworld, has suddenly gone mad, causing hell to lose its order and fall into complete chaos. Viewing the situation with great gravity, the Buddha commands Kakurenbo, a high priest of the human world, to pacify hell and defeat the Yama King. Armed with the "Mahaju" (Demon-Crushing Orb) bestowed upon him, Kakurenbo rushes through a hell teeming with demons and the restless dead.
