Description

Released in 1989 for the Mega Drive as Sega's first console-exclusive RPG, *Vermilion*—internationally titled *Sword of Vermilion*—represents an ambitious early effort by the acclaimed SEGA-AM2 development team. The game is notable for its experimental visual style, which rotates between multiple perspectives including first-person dungeon exploration, top-down town navigation, and side-view boss battles. Set in a sprawling fantasy world, the narrative follows a young protagonist on an epic journey to recover legendary rings and defeat a tyrannical ruler. By integrating real-time combat mechanics, the title sought to provide a distinct, action-oriented alternative to traditional turn-based role-playing games of the era.

Story

In a world plunged into darkness by the malevolent sorcerer Zalts, a young hero named Gill sets out on a perilous journey to recover the eight legendary Soul Stones. Guided by wise sages and joined by loyal companions, Gill must navigate a vast map to combat the oppressive forces of Zalts' minions. Throughout this epic adventure, he masters a variety of weapons and powerful spells to explore diverse lands and restore peace to the realm.
