Description

Released in May 1988 for the PC-8801, Wolf Team’s *ARCUS* is a pioneering role-playing game that challenged genre conventions by omitting traditional leveling and experience points in favor of a narrative-focused experience. Set in the declining kingdom of Arcasas, the story follows the young protagonist Jedah Chaf as he embarks on a journey that evolves from a simple quest for knighthood into a grand, fate-driven adventure. The title is noted for its dramatic visual storytelling, 3D dungeon navigation, and an innovative combat system that relies on character skill and hidden proficiency rather than static stat growth. This influential release stands as the first entry in Wolf Team’s *Sacred Fantasy* series and remains a significant example of the creative experimentation seen in late 1980s Japanese computer gaming.

Story

Once a land blessed by nature, the Kingdom of Arcas has fallen into ruin after being forsaken by the faeries and losing the protection of the spirits. Amidst this era of constant tribal conflict, a young woodcutter named Jeda Chaff pays his final respects at his father’s grave. Following in his father’s footsteps, Jeda departs from his home with the aspiration of becoming a knight. What begins as a personal quest for glory, however, soon draws him into a much larger, fateful struggle to restore balance to the crumbling kingdom.
