Description
Released in 1990 for the NEC PC-8801, *Cyber Block Metal Orange* is a unique hybrid that blends traditional block-breaking gameplay with the "bishoujo" (pretty girl) genre. Developed by the cult studio Custom, the game distinguishes itself by incorporating a power-up system inspired by the *Gradius* series, allowing players to strategically enhance their paddle’s capabilities. Featuring character illustrations by manga artist Hirohiko Yanagi, it serves as a notable example of a successful transition from doujin software to a commercial release. The game is particularly celebrated among retro enthusiasts for its high-quality FM synthesis soundtrack, composed by industry figures including Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata.
Story
In *Cyberblock Metal Orange*, players control a custom battleship piloted by a character named Chip, the mascot of the developer, Custom. As you navigate through various stages of competitive brick-breaking, you are tasked with breaking through obstacles while collecting power-ups. The game features five different heroines, represented by illustrations from adult manga artist Hirohiko Yanagi. Progressing through the stages rewards the player with visual scenes featuring these characters, blending arcade action with the aesthetic traditions of the era's "bishoujo" software.
