Description
Released in 1986 by Game Arts for the PC-8801, *Silpheed* stands as a landmark in gaming history as one of the first titles to pioneer 3D polygonal graphics in a home shooter. The game features the experimental starfighter "Silpheed," which players pilot against the terrorist leader Xacalite to prevent the destruction of the galaxy. Beyond its innovative visuals, it gained acclaim for its sophisticated use of FM synthesis for music and early voice synthesis technology, which pushed the hardware to its creative limits. This high-speed, 3D-perspective space combat experience remains a defining classic of the era, showcasing the technical ambition of early Japanese computer gaming.
Story
In the year 3032, humanity has expanded into deep space using salvaged alien technology to establish a vast Galactic Federation. However, the rebel leader Xacalite has stolen the powerful new battleship "Gloire" and launched a series of surprise attacks on federal defense bases in a bid to seize planet-destroying missiles. With the Federation's forces scattered by widespread guerrilla warfare, time has run out to assemble a proper fleet. As a last resort, the command authorizes the deployment of the "Silpheed," a lone, experimental super dogfighter tasked with infiltrating enemy lines to thwart Xacalite and save the galaxy.
