Description

Released by Enix in 1983 and designed by Yuji Horii, *The Portopia Serial Murder Case* is a landmark title that defined the Japanese adventure game genre. Set in Kobe, the game tasks players with solving a locked-room murder through a command-input interface, requiring them to gather evidence and interrogate suspects alongside their partner, Yasu. Its move away from abstract puzzles toward a narrative-driven, social-themed mystery represented a significant innovation in 1980s software design. This influential work laid the foundational storytelling principles for visual novels and remains a foundational piece of Japanese gaming history.

Story

Kozo Yamakawa, the president of a loan company in Kobe, is found dead in a locked room. As a detective with the Hyogo Prefectural Police, you and your subordinate "Yasu" begin an investigation to uncover the truth behind the crime. Using a unique command-input system, you must gather clues, interrogate suspects, and examine evidence to identify the killer. This game brought a profound, socially-aware mystery narrative to the genre and revolutionized early adventure games.
