Description

Released by Carry Lab in 1985, The Great Escape is a strategic action game set in a three-dimensional maze reminiscent of an M.C. Escher optical illusion, where the goal is to rescue and lead fellow prisoners to safety. Players must carefully manage limited ammunition and grenades to push back enemies while directing their rescued comrades, creating a uniquely tense rescue experience for the time. With its challenging mechanics—such as the risk of accidentally hitting allies and a steadily increasing difficulty—the game demands deep tactical thinking far beyond standard action titles. Featuring an unusually detailed tutorial demo for its era, the game remains a beloved classic that exemplifies the methodical depth of early PC gaming.

Story

Set in an enemy prisoner-of-war camp built within a converted ancient castle, the game depicts the mission of a lone soldier tasked with rescuing his captured allies. Players must use guns and grenades to fend off enemy troops while locating and freeing prisoners trapped deep within the labyrinthine facility. Your primary mission is to skillfully command your rescued charges to "gather" or "scatter," breaking through enemy blockades to escort them all out of the castle. The stage is set for a high-stakes rescue drama set against the backdrop of a complex, mind-bending architectural maze.
