Description
Originally released by Koei for the PC-8801 in 1989, this title is a historical simulation game set in the turbulent Bakumatsu period following the arrival of the Black Ships. Players step into the shoes of historical figures like Ryoma Sakamoto or Takamori Saigo, aiming to lead the nation toward a new dawn by advocating for one of three ideologies: Shogunate support, imperial loyalty, or a unified parliamentary government. Beyond martial conflict, the game features an innovative system requiring players to travel the country, engage in heated debates with key figures, and win over support to determine Japan’s future path. In addition to its historical significance as one of Koei’s flagship "Historical Simulation" titles, the game features a brilliant score composed by Yoko Kanno, which elevates this grand historical drama.
Story
The stage is mid-19th century Japan, a nation awakened from its peaceful slumber by the arrival of the Black Ships and thrown into the chaotic upheaval of the Bakumatsu era. Players become one of several historical figures, such as Ryoma Sakamoto, Takamori Saigo, or Kaishu Katsu, each striving to shape the country’s fate through the ideologies of Shogunate support, imperial loyalty, or a parliamentary government. By traveling across Japan, engaging in intense debates with influential contemporaries, and occasionally resorting to force, players forge the nation's new path with their own hands. It is a grand historical drama about riding the tumultuous waves of change and bringing a new dawn to a nation in crisis.
